Energy Magpie
When I first started playing mtg, me and my younger brother played using my older brothers’ decks. He would always use this really dynamic blink-slash-energy-slash-+1/+1 counters Bant deck.
It had cards like
[[Bristling Hydra]]
that had built-in responses where you had to think about how much energy you were willing to spend to protect and buff your creatures.
It had cards like
[[Felidar Guardian]]
that you did not want to play as soon as you had the opportunity. You had to think about when the opportune time to play it was.
Cards like
[[Consulate Surveillance]]
could really put all the energy to good use, but still made you think about when it was time to expend your batteries.
I really miss all the options that deck provided, and all the different themes it was able to incorporate into a single playstyle.
I dig the blink effects that cause tons of ETBs, protect your creatures and cause all sorts of shenanigans.
[[Long Road Home]]
Can be used to buff your creature, keep a large enemy creature off the defense for a round, cause
[[Fathom Mage]]
to trigger itself, and so much more! Blinking is a utility theme.
I really miss the push and drag of collecting and spending energy. There are so many different effects that energy can be used for, and it’s all instant speed!
[[Bespoke Battlewagon]]
Is practically a bloody planeswalker! Energy is a utility theme.
+1/+1 counters can be used in many ways. It’s usually just a win-con. My preferred style is making them trigger cards like
[[Animation Module]]
that triggers cards like
[[Decoction Module]]
that triggers cards like
[[Fabrication Module]]
all of which can all be triggered either by the blink, energy and +1/+1 themes in the deck.
I really miss it.
So I made a commander deck.
Energy Magpie

This deck turned out to be the most fun deck I have ever made. I have played it a fuckton at my local bar, and it’s become sort of infamous. Having a commander that removes a creature from every player really makes you a huge nuisance. Especially when people forget that you have her readily available for 3 mana at any time. She can be protected using until end step blinks, which also allow you to choose new creatures to keep in her pocket and trigger your own exiled creature’s ETB. Just be careful when exiling enemy creatures with ETB effects!
This deck has two main weaknesses:
-
You have very few win conditions. There are incredible draw engines, protective spells and ramp effects in this deck, but only a few finishers. [[Aethersquall Ancient]]
has been the most effective. [[Herald of Secret Streams]]
less so.
-
This deck is very difficult to play. By design, you always have SO many options. It takes so much time to find the right moves. One person I played against recommended I play other decks because of all the trigger shenanagins that have to be worked out. One day I’ll learn to be more decisive and quick in my reasoning. If I feel like it, I will write up a deep dive into the cards I put in this deck.
